Windows 10 issues

Hi Eric,

I just bought a new laptop with Windows 10. My PL was purchased in 2014. PL was working great with my old laptop but that laptop is dead now. I followed the sticky Windows 10 thread. Where I run into trouble is at the point where I connect the laptop to the PL to install the drivers. Windows can't find the PL under devices and printers.

When I turn the ignition on the green PL light flashes once, not sure if that's normal. It doesn't continue flashing as it used to with the laptop connected. Perhaps this is normal if the two are not communicating.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

With windows 10, sometimes you have to make sure the laptop is connected to the internet when you plug in the USB cable (with the key on). Then windows will usually look for the drivers with windows update. Sometimes it takes several minutes.

Eric, I just got my a/f gauge and sensor and powerlogger. I am going to get a separate laptop for this only. (They are so inexpensive now) Any special requirements? Best Buy has this windows 10 one for only $159.

It should work fine as far as I can tell. As long as it has Windows 10 and a USB port, that's really all that's needed.

Thanks Eric. The new inexpensive laptops don't come with a disk drive but it looks like I can just copy the files to my "big" laptop and then transfer them to a usb flash drive to put them on the little one. I am looking forward to getting into this. It's amazing how fast these GN's are even before fine tuning.

If it has no drive, its possible that could be an issue. The powerlogger program needs to be saved on the laptop. Just need to make sure you can do that.

Thanks Eric, that won't be a problem. The files are easily transferred via zip drive. I have another question. I am not experienced or comfortable enough at this point to do the wiring and installation of the hardware. And so I will turn that over to the very experienced Buick guys at the Auto Center in Chappaqua. My question is this: If they install the hardware and use their laptop to complete the installation including upgrading the scanmaster to 2.2 will my computer catch up and sync with this later when I take it home. I would think that it would so if you wanted to change laptop a year from now you just need to power up the car with it connected to the laptop and the laptop will do the synching as long as the software is open at the time? I just wanted to make sure.
Another question: Since the new setup will talk to the ECU faster, will the fuel curve, (which seems to jump all over the place on the scanmaster 2.1) be steadier?
Might be dumb questions but I want to be sure I understand all this before I leap.
Thanks for all your patience and help
Tom

No you need to install everything on your laptop.

The powerlogger has no effect on the fuel curve. It's just a datalogger. It won't change how the car runs.

Thanks again Eric. I'm glad I asked about the installation. I asked the question about the A/F ratio because I was wondering if the voltage reading on the scanmaster jumping around means that the actual a/f ratio is constantly going from rich to lean?

The stock O2 is supposed to jump up and down like that when cruising around, anywhere from 000-800. The actual AFR when cruising is typically 14.4-15.0, in that range.

I will be installing the powerlogger soon. Two questions.
1. Can my mechanic install all the hardware first (including the new AEM a/f sensor and gauge and THEN I come down to the shop with my laptop and we finish the installation? Or is my laptop required while he installs hardware?
2 The instructions call for selecting the right driver folder during installation. I am running Windows 10-64 bit system. So would I just select the folder called "AMD64"?

You can install in any order, it doesn't matter.

With windows 10, it should install the drivers automatically. You normally don't need to do anything.
