Hi everyone,
first post here, I’ve had my 86 GN for about 26 years, in its heyday it used to run high 11s at Pomona raceway but a majority of that time was also sitting around at different friends places for storage. I’ve finally started to working on getting it roadworthy and I’ve run into a weird snag.
The fuel system was trashed from sitting so I’ve replaced basically everything from fuel cap to fuel rail. New Spectre tank, new fuel sender with -8&-6 fittings, 525lph Hellcat pump, -8&-6 Cruz PTFE fuel lines, rebuilt my old Accufab F with a new diaphragm, flushed out the stock fuel rail with Evaporust, had the 55# Siemens/Deka injectors flowed by RC engineering and they got a clean bill of health. Finally I threw a on the rail Marshall gauge on it even though they usually don’t last long from vibration.
what I ran into when I finally got it fired up for the first time in many years, was the car running super rich, I had the base fuel PSI set to 38 with vac off and it smelled pretty rich and idled like crap. I checked for vac leaks but didn’t see anything obvious and eventually got a check engine light.
since my DirectScan was quite old, I ordered and installed a PowerLogger and found I had a Code 45. I figured the old AC Delco 3 wire sensor was dead and replaced it with a Denso. Got the same symptoms and code. BLMs were pegged at 100-109 max. O2v volts were maxed as well with little x count movement. Just revving it in park it would have a tip in stumble.
frustrated I lowered the base fuel psi to 28 to see what would happen and the 02 started to become responsive along with the x counts and the code never returned. The idle seemed to be more responsive and the exhaust didn’t stink. I have yet to drive the car as it needs current registration and a few other minor things, but I feel like the base FP is way too low to support boost. I purchased a separate FP test gauge and I will compare readings later.
has anyone had similar issues running a larger fuel pump with a stock style regulator? I really don’t want to go to a larger/diff FPR and I know the accufabs don’t have the greatest reputation anymore.
also im running a Neal Steward street chip and I also have a Jay Carter street chip, but I have a TT chip on order from Eric as maybe that could help? (can’t hurt to have tuning options anyway )
thanks in advance,
dave
